Thailand is home to some of the world’s largest and most iconic shopping malls, offering a range of shopping, dining, and entertainment experiences that attract both locals and an increasing amount of tourists. Phuket, specifically, is experiencing a significant surge in tourism, welcoming millions of travelers and generating billions in revenue annually. As a result, the environmental impact of large shopping centers has become increasingly apparent.
Many large shopping centers consume large quantities of energy and produce substantial waste. Mindful that up to 80% of our visitors are international tourists, Jungceylon Shopping Center Phuket is actively driving sustainable growth within its operations and across the broader Phuket community.
By prioritizing sustainable practices and fostering safe, inclusive environments for both our staffs and guests, Jungceylon is committed to balancing tourism growth with environmental and social responsibility. Furthermore, we understand that building a safe and sustainable future requires the collaboration of larger communities, and so outreach has also been a top priority at Jungceylon.
At Jungceylon, we embrace the 4R principles: Reduce, Reuse, Repair, and Recycle. We are currently working to find ways to creatively merge the final three principles (Reuse, Repair, Recycle) into an “Upcycle” approach to maximize positive environmental impact.
This means not only minimizing waste but also finding creative ways to repurpose materials into new items. One example of this at Junceylong was our Upcycled Tote Bag Project, which transformed old commercial banners into chic tote bags. The earnings from these tote bags were directed to supporting marine life preservation.
In alignment with the Reduce principle, Jungceylon has implemented many energy conservation and waste reduction strategies during our newest renovation, completed in 2024.
Furthermore, Junceylon’s waste management is ISO Certified. This certification reflects Junceylon’s commitment to responsible waste disposal and hygiene, with comprehensive recycling and separation programs.
Winner of the 2025 Thailand Energy Awards (Conservative Energy—Building Category)
For these efforts, Jungceylon Shopping Mall was honored as a winner in the 2025 Thailand Energy Awards in the Conservative Energy area, specifically in the Building category. This is a prestigious national recognition from the Department of Alternative Energy Development and Efficiency (DEDE), Ministry of Energy. This award spotlights our leadership and innovation in sustainable building practices. Criteria assessed include energy efficiency, renewable energy integration, and exemplary management of environmental impacts.
Winning this award acknowledges the effectiveness of:
Our solar power transitions,
Advanced chiller and lighting upgrades,
Comprehensive water reuse and waste management,
Heat-reflective architecture,
Ongoing staff and tenant engagement in operational sustainability.
The Thailand Energy Awards inspire organizations nationwide to strive for energy excellence, highlighting success stories that align modern business with environmental stewardship and responsible tourism. Jungceylon’s recognition affirms our commitment to a sustainable future for Phuket’s tourism sector and the broader Thai community
Jungceylon serves as a cultural and community hub, hosting major festivals such as Songkran, Loy Krathong, the Vegetarian Festival, and Christmas. These events foster local pride, cultural exchange, and a sense of belonging among residents and visitors alike. We believe that this cultural appreciation and/or pride of Phuket correlates to people’s willingness to protect Phuket.
Beyond celebrations, Jungceylon has hosted numerous sustainability campaigns for the public, raising broader awareness on sustainable lifestyles and promoting waste reduction, plastic-free shopping, and marine conservation awareness. These campaigns included Go Green Shopping @Jungceylon, Zero Bag Zero Waste, and SAVE THE SEA.
We also collaborate with local organizations on sustainability initiatives such as waste management, coral reef restoration, tree planting, beach clean-ups, and marine animal release programs. Recently, we collaborated with Haadthip Public Company Limited on the Coke Trash Lucky campaign, encouraging better waste separation and comprehensive waste management. Jungceylon also donated and provided volunteers for seagrass restoration projects, crucial for dugong conservation and marine ecosystem health.
The shopping center itself also hosts annual events such as World Environment Day, World Ocean Day, and Earth Hour to raise awareness about global environmental challenges. Through initiatives like the Jungceylon Eco Creative Contest and upcycled art exhibitions, young people are encouraged to use their creativity to propose new ideas and transform waste into innovative products.
Overall, we at Jungceylon believe that bringing communities together is essential for addressing challenges like climate pollution and developing creative solutions for a more sustainable future. With Phuket’s tourism sector rapidly expanding, Jungceylon recognizes the importance of engaging both locals and tourists in shared efforts to protect the environment.
By hosting interactive art exhibitions, educational workshops, and community clean-up initiatives, Jungceylon actively strengthens community bonds and fosters a sense of collective responsibility. This inclusive approach ensures that everyone, from staff to shoppers to locals, has a role to play in shaping a resilient and sustainable future for Phuket. Ultimately, without the active participation and commitment of the community, achieving lasting sustainability would not be possible.
